As the Vendor Relations Chair of AACWP, I am once again heading up this stellar event with my super committee (Thanks to Julian Leaver and Alison Fuld). If you are a first-timer to this event, this is how it works...the AACWP membership comprised of 75+ wedding planners in the Dallas & Fort Worth area have voted for their favorite vendor in each of 17 categories (BEST florist, BEST band, BEST rentals, etc. etc.). On February 28th we will announce all of the nominees and winners at our french vintage themed awards banquet (yes, I did just say french vintage and it will be to d i e for). The winner of each category receives a lovely personalized award and says a few short words at the podium. The My Favorite Vendor event just gets better and better every year. It is basically open to the public although you will mainly find the best of the best wedding planners and wedding industry vendors enjoying a multiple course meal and celebrating one another's year of successes. We hope to see you there!

Christmas, New Year's Eve, and Valentines Day. Yes, engagement season is upon us! If you know a lovely engaged couple and think that they would be a great match for Shannon Schultz Events, please let us know. When they book with us (now through March), we will treat you to a fantastic meal at Ellerbe Fine Foods right here in Fort Worth. It is hands down my most favorite restaurant...not to mention that chef Molly was a 2011 Shannon Schultz Events client, and co-owner Richard is on our 2012 wedding agenda. Yes, we love to give back to our clients and our friends because as I say, "Our friends become our clients and our clients become our friends."

Year in Review; 2011 Photo Faves

I do not need to rake through the photo opps of 2011 to choose my favorite images. They come to mind quite vividly. They are surprisingly not photos of enormously beautiful florals, elaborate lounge set-ups, or stunning cakes. They are actually images of our brides and loved ones at thier most joyful moments. Don't get me wrong - I'm all about the design concept and theme; florals, linens, bands, and cakes. But what our clients truly remember is the seamless timing of events on the wedding day and how that all adds up to the happiness of a bride and her family and friends. So I hope that you enjoy these portraits of truly happy women, all about to embark on the beginning of their lives as wives, hand-holders, and best friends to the man of their lives. Because that is what it is all about.

Engaged! Rachel and Dominic

What a perfectly splendid couple. Rachel and Dominic will be wed at Piazza in the Village on July 28th, 2012 and we seriously cannot wait to see what our team of fantastic vendors unfolds...birchwood trees surrounding the dancefloor, pearl and diamond brooch inspiration, and a ruffled cake to die for. Rachel and Dominic are truly a joy to work with and we are thrilled to be a part of the planning process and wedding weekend.

Don't Forget the Dress!

At the end of every reception comes the strike. Vendors swoop in, clean up your mess (glitter on the floor optional) and your wedding is a sweet memory. But what about your coveted, once pristine wedding dress which is now stained with the mandatory reception damage? You cannot just have your everyday dry cleaner take care of it (even if who have opted in to that lovely door-to-door service).

This is the exact dilemma my mom and I had as we sat and stared post-reception at my sister’s amazing Amsale gown. So I turned to the all-knowing Christina Plumlee at Neiman Marcus bridal salon in downtown Dallas. She introduced us to the fabulous Jonathan Scheer in NYC. We took her advice and without a regret in sight. You think your dry cleaner has got great door-to-door service? Well check this out...

First, I filled out the oh-so-easy online form describing the dress and our information

Second, J.Scheer promptly responded with a personal phone call laying out all of the details.

Third, we were to put the gown in the original bag and drive to our nearest UPS.

Fourth, J.Scheer had contacted that office and had a courier ready and expecting to be at our service.

Fifth, the gown is returned in pristine condition...and not in one of those old-fashioned cellophaned boxes. We can take it out of it’s box at any time to ooooo and awe over it at a moment’s whim.

The best part? No nickle and diming here. You just show up with your dress, pay the “totally worth it” fee and you are done! No additional payment to UPS, just an easy one time payment to J.Scheer. And we are left with still the most beautiful dress we have ever seen.

Now that’s service!

I am honored to be planning the wedding of TCU grad, Jenea Pickering and Caleb Stone. The super sweet couple will be married at Robert Carr chapel on February 25th, 2012 and will party the night away at The Worthington Hotel. I cannot give away the details but I can't wait to share our plans for the fantastic wedding cake and gorgeous florals that we are head over heels in love with! Stay tuned!

A Miraculous Recovery

It is not every day that a bride plans two weddings. Laura and Casey initially hired Shannon Schultz Events to plan her intimate beach wedding in Riviera Maya. God had other plans. After two days in Mexico, Laura suffered a stroke and spent a week in the Cancun hospital. Casey was by her side every step of the way, alleviating the fact that their dream wedding was postponed. With the love and support of her friends, family and of course, Casey, Laura made a miraculous and nearly full recovery in Dallas as we were in the midst of planning her second wedding at Avanti Fountain Place. Laura and Casey were a joy to work with and I am so honored to have helped them have the wedding they so deserve. I hope that you enjoy the photos!

Laura took a more traditional approach and spent the morning getting her hair and makeup done at the Fairmont with her wedding party and family.

Laura's original wedding colors for her Mexico wedding was kelly green and coral. We kept the green and gave the new wedding a fresh mix of various shades of green, white, and brown.

Dr. Delphinium Designs provided the florals; parrot tulips, hydrangea and precious ranunculas

Avanti provides a lovely outdoor ceremony and a long, dramatic modern aisle.

It's all in the details. Bridcages with candles hung from the ceiling.

I had to share this lovely work with you! Lauren Essl of Blue Eye Brown Eye wrote up these beautiful envelopes for some rehearsal dinner invitations. The escort cards will match with the beige on white and the table number cards will be the exact reverse of white on beige. Perfectly modern yet traditional and fun! Stay tuned...at the end of August we will have the final images of the entire suite!

Hitting the Newstands

I am excited to announce that Julie and Trey's wedding will be hitting the newstands in The Knot Texas spring/summer 2012 issue. Available to view this December. Here's a few tidbits about their big day...

The couple was married on March 5th, 2011 at the Courtyard on Saint James Place in Houston. Their commitments were made under a Chuppah, designed and built by the Bride’s family. The canopy was accentuated by stunning calla lilies draped over cylinder vases, and highlighted by a contemporary chandelier. The cake was reminiscent of Julie’s favorite painting, “The Kiss,” by Gustav Klimt, in which the figures ironically resemble the bride and groom! The couple resides in Los Angeles, California. Cheers to Julie and Trey!

Premier Frogs Wrap-up

I have to give Laura Chudy and the Alumni staff two thumbs up for a great 2nd Annual Tailgate Practice. Premier Frogs enjoyed top tier food from local restaurants, my favorite's being; Del Frisco's, Ellerbe Fine Foods, and Z's Cafe. A raffle, premier lounge, and musical appearance by Tim Halperin topped off the first half of the party.

A tip to you Premier Frogs...don't leave early! The best part of the party is dancing to Trey and the Tritones and getting in that last flipbook. Everyone has always raved about the favor from last year, but I have to admit, this year's favor wrapped up the party: a Tailgate Survival Kit (pictured above) complete with pom poms for your kiddos, TCU cocktail napkins, Premier Frogs Koozies, and my favorite, the TCU wine key. Keep up the great work! We will be looking forward to the 3rd Annual Tailgate Practice!

Our Six Year Anniversary

Being a wedding planner makes it even more fun to celebrate your very own wedding anniversary. Stuart and I were married 6 years ago in NYC. Our catholic mass was held at Blessed Sacrament off of 71st and Broadway and our reception was held in Rockefeller Center at the 3 West Club. Like many couples, we wish that we could go back and be guests at our own wedding! We had such a special day and this photo inspires me to help make new brides feel so very special on their wedding day. Stuart and I now reside in the great town of Fort Worth, Texas and are avid supporters of the Modern Museum and Texas Christian University.

How to Lick 100 Envelopes

How do you lick 100 envelopes? Quite precisely...don't. Remember that Seinfeld episode where George Costanza's fiance died from ingesting toxins from licking wedding invitation envelopes? Let's all avoid that unfortunate event with these simple steps...

First, you will want to purchase an envelope moistener from your local office supply store. Also have on hand a clean, dry towel and your hand picked envelopes.

Now don't get too excited. This little sponge tool is not magic. You will need to use it with skill. Too much water will run, only to spoil the calligraphy and destroy the envelope glue. Kindly dot the moistener on the towel to place water in the sponge.

Now that we are ready to go, hold the moistener upright and apply to the envelope glue. Do not tip the tool upside-down. You need not apply too much water.

If you see water puddling along the envelope act quickly and wisk away with a dry part of your towel. This will avoid runny calligraphy and ruined paper.

Now carefully fold the envelope closed and confidently press along the edge with your fingertips.

And voila! You have successfully completed your first envelope! Now grab a glass on wine...only 99 more to go! (and keep that vino out of spilling distance!)

Q: You offer something for everyone; weekly menu planning, catering to dinner and cocktail parties, and pairing meals for intimate events. What is your favorite outlet?

My favorite outlet would definitely be planning and serving multicourse menus for dinner parties. I love creating an experience for the diners from beginning to end with my flavors, textures and visual presence of the dishes.

Q: What are you inspired by when putting together a menu for a client?

I always work with seasonal produce when putting together a menu for a client. When produce is at its’ peak, the flavor shines through in the dish.

Q: What foods do you most love working with?

I adore working with fresh herbs—from tarragon, to rosemary, to thyme and lavender. I really can’t think of an instance where I don’t incorporate a fresh herb into a dish to add a burst of freshness and interest to the flavor profile.

Q: Ding-Dong! You have unexpected guests at your door. What is your go-to beverage you will offer them?

I always have St. Germain, an elderflower liquor from France, on hand. I love finishing the liquor with a splash of champagne or club soda and muddled fresh herbs.

A: You are always dreaming up something new at Linguine and Dirty Martinis. What’s on for the wrap up of 2011?

Q: Dinner parties and cocktail parties al fresco! I love making entertaining as simple as possible and these current warmer months with bright produce are ideal for that. I will also begin cooking classes open to the public this summer and in to the holidays. More details to come!

AACWP My Favorite Vendor Awards 2011

As the Vendor Relations Chair for AACWP, I had the honor of planning our 4th annual My Favorite Vendor Awards Event held at Hall of State in Fair Park on Tuesday, February 15th. 183 Dallas wedding industry professionals joined us at this unique venue to accept awards and celebrate one another for a fabulous 2010. Once visiting this lovely piece of architecture, I found that choosing the theme was easy;

"ALL THAT JAZZ, a roaring twenties revelry"

The Cocktail Reception was held in the Hall of Heroes, a lovely circular lobby which boasts statues of Texas legends. The 1920's garbed guests were greeted by an old-school champagne saucer filled to the brim with a lovely French 75 cocktail (my absolute favorite cocktail, which I most generally consume at The Usual), and the jazz sounds of you guessed it, the 1920's (David Patton Jazz Band). Suite 206 provided the lovely Isabelle bar facade, which I had been dying to get my hands on, as well as their luxurious champagne tete a tete for the photo lounge which was provided by Randal Stout Entertainment.

A bell was chimed and our guests were invited to enter the Great Hall. And boy is it Great. You definitely have to check out the enormous gold medallion, well you actually cannot miss it. Immediately upon entrance the Grand Hall, we placed the AACWP logo'd ice sculpture provided by Creative Ice. Let me tell you, ice carvings and liquor luges are back in action! An aisle led the way to our stage and awards, immediately instilling excitement for our nominees. The aisle was flanked by the lovely ivory twist linens of BBJ Linen, severely underused chameleon chairs from Ducky-bobs and completely perfect pearl laced, and feathered florals of Sahana Creative Floral Design. Various lcd screens placed around the perimeter of the room, provided by Randal Stout, played The Great Gatsby and 1920's standards to set the mood.

Members, nominees, and guests took their seats to find a placesetting with a menu for the evening, which was prepared by Food Glorious Food, based on the 1920's theme and complete with a chocolate dessert and bootlegger cherries. Umm...Hello?! Amazing. After skimming the menu and program provided by Paper and Chocolate, excitement set in.

And the program began. I announced the nominees for each of the 17 categories and our super president, Micki Novak, congratulated each winner with a treasured trophy. Each winner gave a lovely speech, and a few entertained us with quite humorous stories.

After all of the designing and planning, I am relieved to know that we had Amanda Marie Portraits (photo above) and LaDonna Visual Artistry were there to help memorex this fantastic evening.

And now that I've got Hall of State under my belt, here are some valuable tips for planning a Hall of State Event:

-Hire a valet. We used Gold Crown for our event and they are absolutely fabulous.

-Make a first impression. Hall of State offers a large grounds directly in front of the building entrance. We set antique cars from the Texas Museum of Automotive History on the grounds to create a grand first impression.

-Have a good rental company. Honestly, the downside of HOS, is the need to bring a lot of items yourself. Ducky-Bob's not only won in the category of rentals, but they provided us with the stage and a ton of necessary rentals. I gotta give a shout out to Jay Cooper for entertaining all of our needs!

-Hire a planner. It sounds funny coming from a wedding planner, but hire a planner! You will need someone to make sure that you have thought of everything that HOS does not offer, and you will need a reputable representative to oversee set-up that can take all day. HOS often offers set-up starting at 10 am (which is definitely a plus and gives you more time to do some amazing things!) You will find myself and a full list of amazing planners at the AACWP website.

Q&A Which of my wedding vendors should I tip and how much do I tip them?

Tipping is a personal expression of gratitude for services delivered graciously and efficiently. Some wedding vendors will expect a tip and some vendors will be pleasantly surprised.

Moreover, the most important people to tip are often overlooked, such as your banquet manager, florist, and photographer. These vendors may be tipped at the end of their service at your discretion (usually $50 to $100).

The obvious people to tip would be your band (around $40 per band member), your valet ($2 per car), your hair stylist (20%), and your limo driver (20% of the bill). Ask your wedding planner or read the fine print in your contracts. Many times the gratuity for your chauffeuer, bartenders, and waitstaff will be included in your bill. Don't be shy! Ask your vendors if their tip is included and even ask to see it in your proposal.

The tricky people to tip are your minister, or your officiant. You may give $75 to $100 to this "vendor" but often times they are obligated to give it back to the church. Consider a gift card to their favorite restaurant or the like if you would like to gift them. A non-religious officiant is usually not permitted to accept gratuity and a hand delivered note is always a lovely touch.

A Season of Giving

The Christmas season is upon us and giving is definitely more fun than receiving. Many times, I encourage brides to make their wedding favors about giving-giving to a cause that you and your fiance are passionate about, giving to your alma mater, or giving to a local family that needs your help. What a better way to celebrate your nuptials than with a giving heart!

Make it work: Have a calligrapher script a note to your guests describing your special wedding favor donation.

Make it fun: Have your guests go home with a custom silicone bracelet embossed with your wedding date or special cause to which you are giving. Better yet-make sure those bracelets are in your wedding colors!

A Sweet Baby Shower

If you are afraid that you will look tacky or greedy accepting a second shower, you could suggest to your gracious friend that you would like to honor your new bundle of joy with an intimate girls lunch with your closest friends.

If you are debating between an online option and snail mail, don’t opt for the easy and economical solution. This is your wedding….not your annual Christmas cookie exchange party. Although personal wedding websites provide valuable information, don’t count on technology for your RSVP’s. Your guests need real, tangible, well thought through paper invitations and reply cards. It’s not just about tradition. It is about respect. Many of your guests will go the distance to attend your wedding; airfare, hotel rooms, babysitters, not to mention your gift. Let your guests know that you appreciate them with a hand-picked invitation wrapped in an envelope of beautiful calligraphy. It is like a present they get to unwrap. Now, please allow me to graciously dismount my soapbox- If time is an issue and you must use the internet to reach people, skip the mass email or casual evite and use an exciting vehicle such as Paperless Post. Although it is online, your guests will appreciate that extra mile.

Q & A: I am having a destination wedding in Mexico. When should I send out my Save the Dates and Invitations?

With a local wedding in the United States, you can bet on that typical 6 to 10 week mark to get your invites in the mail. A destination wedding, however, does not surrender to such a simple formula. Not only do you need pertinent information from your resort coordinator, travel agent, and wedding coordinator, you also need to consider all of the information that your guests will need about attending a wedding in Mexico. Thus your Save the Date must be extremely well thought out and help from your wedding planner will be worth its weight in gold. Call me to chat about your beachside nuptials!

Q & A We are having a sit-down dinner in Dallas. When should we cut the cake?

You will want to discuss the timing of your meal with your caterer and wedding planner. Many venues insist on serving cake at a very specific time. One option is to cut your cake while your guests are enjoying their entrees so that the cake can be passed tableside after dinner. If you are serving an additional dessert following the entrée, then save the cake cutting for the middle of the evening when your band goes on break. A recording of “How Sweet It is,” can be played while you and your new hubby cut and share that special first piece of cake together. If a groom’s cake is in the mix, immediately cut it just as you did your bride’s cake for guests to enjoy. Cheers!

The weekend was an utter success; we visited 9 venues and 2 dress shops in two days...all culminating in a wedding gown purchase and 2 favorite venues.

This weekend was all about timing; from planning the start and end times at each venue visit right down to meeting Orlando from Romona Keveza at Impressions Bridal Salon. -Of whom specifically put together a gown just for Julie.

AACWP Fashion Show

Once again, AACWP beat all expectations! Our annual fashion show at Union Station featured gowns from Priscilla of Boston Bridal Salon. We were presented with gowns from all six of the collections that Priscilla of Boston carries, the Platinum Collection being our favorite. M&M The Special Event Company broke out the good stuff-gold branches laced with moss, blush peonies set in silver bowls, and glossy silver chargers shimmered under gorgeous candlelight. We topped off the evening with a charming dessert table from La Duni (I am a chocolate girl but those lemon meringue cupcakes made my night)! A special thanks to all of these preferred vendors that made the event a huge success.

The Couple
Courtney and Chris dreamed of a big ballroom bash with all of the personal touches. The bride-to-be was finishing up her last semester at TCU, working at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth and was preparing to move to Alaska with her husband-to-be.
The Work
Courtney hired Fort Worth wedding planner, Shannon Schultz after she had chosen her ceremony and reception venue. I attended every vendor appointment and provided cost effective solutions to her design desires. I effectively and regularly communicated with the mother of the bride, who lived out of the area, but wanted to be included in the wedding plans. During the final weeks, I collaborated with Courtney to create her wedding day timeline and ultimately ensured that the catering director and DJ followed it properly.
The Big Day
“Your creative ideas and professionalism, along with your warmth and personal touches made our daughter’s wedding more than we could have possibly imagined.”
The evening began underneath a glimmering chandelier where the couple recited handwritten vows. Following the ceremony, the guests were kindly escorted to a quaint courtyard for signature cocktails and hors d'ouerves. Shortly after, the doors to the ballroom opened to boast a glistening array of crystal laced florals underneath an amber glow and everyone danced the night away. To top off the night, Courtney tossed her bouquet off of a two story balcony and the couple was whisked away to their Honeymoon Suite.

AACWP March Meeting: The Art of the First Impression

AACWP’s March meeting was held at Seventeen Seventeen, restaurant and event space at the Dallas Museum of Art. The subject of discussion was “The Art of the First Impression” and I had the pleasure of sitting next to our guest of honor, Vicki Petersen, owner of Paper and Chocolate.

Vicki spoke to us about how your wedding invitation sets the tone for your entire wedding weekend and is most likely, besides the Save the Date, the first thing that your guests will see when it comes to your wedding. She passed around stationary specimens fit for the biggest fete in town. I was incredibly impressed by the beautiful letterpress and fine papery. Even your guest who knows the least about paper and stationary will be impressed. Vicki even mentioned that you will receive phone calls from your guests complimenting you on your invitation and ultimately eager to attend your wedding.

As Vicki passed around a good amount of invitation samples for us to peruse, she informed us on how letterpress is actually done. I was amazed to finally learn all of the work that goes into creating a letterpress invitation. Each image is metal cast prior to print and the designer works diligently to line up the color schemes. I guess what they say is true: you get what you pay for.

As the meeting went on the members discussed the importance of our first impression as wedding planners, and we held a round table discussion about the first impression of the wedding ceremony.

But my favorite part about the meeting was visiting with Vicki and her take on chocolate. You need just one little piece of the good stuff to get the job done.

How to arrange your Valentine's Day Bouquet

Here's how to arrange that special Valentine's bouquet and make it last.
1. Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle. Start cutting just a bit. You can always cut more if you want them shorter but not vice versa!
3. Choose your container. And get creative. Try using a pretty tea cup, your husband's fraternity pitcher, or even a unique glass water bottle. I like to take a single leftever bloom and place it in a round votive filled with warm water, and place it on my kitchen windowsill.
3. Add a teaspoon sugar or flower powder to your container. Add warm water if you would like to open the petals.
4. Pull off any outer petals that are brown. Pull off most of the foliage that will dip below your water line.
5. Finally, place the stems in your container, playing around with them until they are just right. Use clear hair bands, a larger magnolia or banana leaf to wrap around the inside of your clear container, and use the rule of three or five. Odd numbers always work better than even.

And remember, watch that water line throughout the week...roses can be thirsty and you will want to keep them hydrated for a long lasting bouquet. Enjoy!

How to Freeze the Top of a Wedding Cake

1. Remove the top tier of the cake.
2. If the cake is made with buttercream frosting, chill the cake in the refrigerator for one hour at the least to harden the frosting.
3. Remove the cake from the fridge and wrap with plastic wrap.
4. Place the tier in a cake box which you can find at a craft store. Do not depend on your baker to supply this for you.
5. Wrap the entire cake box with plastic wrap.
6. Ask your wedding planner not only to supervise this project, but to make sure that the cake is brought home to you safely from the venue.

1. Schedule “the rounds”: Once you have had your First Dance spend the next 45 minutes visiting with your guests. That way, you can spend the rest of your evening in a guiltless delight dancing with your friends and sharing time with your new hubby. Make a pact with your wedding planner that she will politely steal you away from your Great Aunt Anne who is monopolizing your time.

2. Eat before the Reception: Share dinner in a private room with your husband for the first 15-20 minutes of the cocktail hour. It will give you a special time together and give you both the energy needed to dance the night away.

3. Have your Bags Packed: Have your suitcases ready if you are leaving early the next morning for your Honeymoon. You won’t want to spend you first day as husband and wife playing the fun game of “Where’s our camera?” and “I can’t find my passport!”

4. Pay Your Bills: Have all outstanding payments ready for your wedding planner. He can hand off personal checks to your vendors the day of during set-up. That way, you won’t be busy doing business during your celebration.

Choosing a photographer can be the most important decision you make when planning your wedding. A photographer can make or break your wedding. You can buy the best of everything…the most elaborate cake, the most popular band, and bountiful amounts of flowers; but without a committed photographer, your efforts can go unremembered. Even if you are on a budget and need to spare any expense, a great photographer can capture the details that you are able to elaborate upon. Artists such as International Photographer, Sara Donaldson have a knack for capturing extraordinary moments and practice the skill and dedication to present you with photographs that will relive every moment. Pick a professional that has an artistic eye and will not present you with anything less than ordinary. Many budget books will suggest that you have a friend take the photos and some photographers will even offer a budget-friendly option; a CD capturing all the moments of the wedding. That sounds great-and I am sure some CD’s live up to their promise. But do yourself a favor. Ask for references. Ask your wedding planner or past brides about the services they received and make sure that they paid for great quality work that will survive decades. If you do not have the expertise of a wedding planner, do not be afraid to interview a few photographers and ask to see a portfolio of their work. Our tip: Ask to see all the pictures-not just the great ones. This is your wedding. You will want to remember every bit (and see the ones you missed). With all of the anticipation of the ceremony, the guests you’ll need to visit with, and your time on the dance floor, you will need the photos to capture every single moment. Do your homework. Get a great photographer.

I’m always amazed at what some men will wear to a wedding. And most of those men that I’m referring to probably won’t ever read this article. But for those who do take pride in their appearance, that upon which we are judged at first glance, this is for you. Let’s start with the basics. Your role as a gentlemanly guest of a wedding is to show your appreciation and respect for the bride and groom, their family and other friends; to celebrate in their time of joy…NOT to stand out from the crowd. Nothing should take attention away from the bride – nor more subtly your date to the wedding.

So let’s make it simple: A suit, a dress shirt (preferably long sleeved) and a tie. No sneakers unless you are a hip hop artist, and no jeans and boots unless you literally had no time to change from working on the ranch. This fall there are a number of items that will make your appearance say “I care about how you see me”. Stick with a simple dark suit – pack up your linen and light colored suits to save for next spring. Keep the shirt white, blue, or ecru, and stay away from the pinks and yellows until the spring as well. Pick out a simple tie, solids and strips do a great job of that. Current trends are more about the cut of the suit and how things fit rather than the overzealous pattern or print on the tie (The Office’s Michael Scott has an endless supply of these ties and boxy suits– and we all know the impression he gives). My favorite subtle way to complete the outfit is a pocket square; linen and folded or silk and stuffed, you make the call. Just remember to pay attention to the details, be sure your tie is tight, dimpled and snug around the neck, suit buttoned and face clean shaven. I’m always amazed at how one minor detail can throw off an entire appearance. If you’d like more direction, just pick up a copy of a men’s magazine to get some hints. Remember, the details make all the difference. And everyone, especially the bride, will be appreciative.

1. Start with a Number. Several factors may determine how many guests you invite; your budget, the number of people your church and venue will accommodate, and your desires. Do you want a big bash or an intimate affair?

2. Play Fair. Split the number you have decided upon into categories. Most brides have 3 categories; one for you and your fiancé, one for the parents of the bride, and one for the parents of the groom. Q&A: How Much Should I spend on a Wedding Gift?

The Knot recommends not spending less than $50. Of course, take into account how well you know the couple.

For a coworker or distant relative spend $50 to $75.
For a friend or relative spend $75 to $100.
For a close friend or relative spend $100 to $150.

I suggest that you also take into account the Golden Rule. How generous was the couple when they bought a gift for you?

Tip: As soon as you get the Save the Date or Invitation, buy your shower gift as well as the wedding gift. Saving yourself from last-minute shopping will make sure that you are not obligated to buy the high ticket items that are left over.

How to Read a Wedding Invitation

Being able to properly read a wedding invitation is a life skill. It will save you time and chagrin as a wedding guest. This is how you read a typical invitation…

Style: The style of an invitation will dictate your attire.
Is it engraved or letterpressed, 6x9 inches, and written in a formal script?
You will be wearing a formal dress or suit.
Is it of an interesting shape or display a casual symbol such as a seashell?
Less formal attire is acceptable.

Time of Day: The time of day will also dictate your attire.
Is it an evening wedding?
The attire will be more formal. Stay away from the day dress or seersucker suit.
Is it a daytime wedding?
You may wear pastels or linen. A tea-length dress or light suit is acceptable.
Is it a daytime Ceremony with an evening Reception to follow?
If desired, you may schedule two different ensembles for a daytime wedding followed by an evening reception.

Who is Invited?: Take special notice of which names are written on the inner envelope. Those names state those invited. If the names of your children are not stated, you need to hire a babysitter. You may bring a date if your invitation states “and guest.”

The Response: Decide if you are able to attend and promptly respond if a response card is included.

Need more help? Save invites in a file and after the wedding, note on the back of the invitation what most people were wearing and if children were present. This way, you will be able to check your records when a new invitation arrives in your mailbox.

Pre-Party Fashion Show

Last night I attended FrogChic, a killer fashion show at Neiman Marcus for TCU’s new group, Premier Frogs. I was inspired by the football field runway, sweet treats, horned frog purple champagne, and goodie bags. Why not make a fashion show a pre-wedding event for your guests? It sure beats the usual bridal luncheon!

Here’s how to make it your own as well as do-able for your budget…

The Venue: Most local boutiqes will support your fashion show after hours. Ask for a discount for the night of the fashion show so that your wedding guests can shop away!

The Runway: Use a white aisle runner (like this one from Target) or a colored one to reflect your wedding colors (The Wedding Outlet) to precede your stroll down the aisle. Even place a sticker or appliqué of your monogram for a personal touch. Rent black wooden chairs to line the aisle.

The Models: Your bridesmaids will be more than happy to work the runway! Go in to the shop a day early to pick out their attire.

The Goody Bag: Fill guest goody bags with directions to the wedding, mini bottles of champagne, and local favorites such as a cowboy boot picture frame or a day’s pass to a local museum.

The Food & Drink: Make sure to ask the shop owner if refreshments are allowed. Petit fours, cookies, colored champagne (to match your wedding colors) and water are your best choices. Keep it simple!

Set-up and Clean Up: Ask your Wedding Planner to take care of all the details for you, from start to finish, so that you can concentrate on being a great hostess.

Wedding History: Why White?

Traditionally, the Bride will wear white on her wedding day. But it wasn’t always this way. In the 19th Century, blue was the symbol of purity and most Brides wore a blue dress. Then along came Queen Victoria who in 1840 married Prince Albert of Saxe in a white dress, white being the symbol of wealth. Needless to say, Queen Victoria started a craze and any woman wanting to show off their social status wore a glamorous white gown. Prior to this, ancient Brides wore colorful dresses to illustrate the joy of their marriage. I have recently seen wedding dresses in grey, purple and blue, bringing the trend full-circle. 4 Tips to get the ball rolling…

1. Hire your Wedding Planner. A Professional Wedding Planner has a well-oiled order of organizing your wedding details. For instance, a popular band may need to be booked before you even set your wedding date or reserve your venue. Not only that, but you will ultimately save money, stay organized, and enjoy your engagement. Your first bridal session with your Wedding Planner will help you decide whether you need Full-Service Coordination or Final Month Coordination.

2. Create a Vision Board. You may already own a stack of wedding magazines chock-full of dresses, cakes, themes, colors, etc. Browse through, cut out the pictures that initially speak to you the most and paste them on your poster board. You’ll find that your vision for the big day will shine through.

3. Steer clear of Dress Shops. Most brides, once engaged, want to run to every dress shop and immediately start adorning themselves in visions of white. But hold off on purchasing. You will want to establish your vision and reserve your venue first in order to buy the perfect dress for your nuptials. You may initially dream of an outdoor wedding, but then fall in love with an ornate ballroom. Dresses for each venue will look vastly different. Save yourself from buying two dresses (unless, of course, you have chosen to wear one dress for the Ceremony and another for the Reception).

4. Establish your budget. There are three things that dictate a wedding; the wishes of the Bride, church policy, and the budget. Planning cannot begin without the latter. Having a hard time choosing a number? Sit down with your wedding planner and financer to create a budget (minimum and maximum). Even the Brides with the most bucks in the bank need a budget.

Do you ever feel that everyone gets married at the same time? Or that everyone has a baby all at the same time? And you are left with the expenses of hosting 20 showers in one year? You are not alone! Here are some tips to make each of your numerous showers extraordinary and budget friendly.

Hostesses: Invite friends to host the shower with you. Explain to each potential hostess the estimated cost so that she knows upfront. Keep hostesses to a maximum of five. The Bride or Mom-to-Be will most likely purchase gifts for her hostesses and you will not want to overwhelm her with providing too many gifts.

Venue: Offer your home. Why pay for overpriced food or even a rental fee when you can have a great excuse to have your cleaning lady come for an hour?

Invites: Find customized designs on Etsy. Vendors like sweetpeababy will allow you to pick a design, customize with shower information, and email you the design to print at your local print center.

Décor: Make your décor the favor. Use double-sided tape to wrap small flower pots with polka dot ribbon. Place them around your home as decoration and make sure that each guest takes one home.

Food & Beverage: Make it special. Ask each hostess to bring her personal china to the party. Your guests will feel extra special eating off of the best of the best. Collaborate with your hostesses on food. Each hostess can bring their signature dish on their own silver serving platter. And of course, offer champagne! Each hostess can bring a bottle and the bubbly will keep things rollin’!

Cake: Splurge on super cute cupcakes. Most bakeries will charge $3 or $4 per cupcake. Set them up on a two or three tiered cake platter for a lovely presentation. You will be free of the cake-cutting mess and guests will feel welcome to eat their treat at their own pace, instead of waiting for a cake cutting ceremony.

Wedding Etiquette: Wedding Shower Tips for the Bride

1. Be Thoughtful: Bring a gift for the hostess; the hostess’s favorite libation, a gift certificate to a restaurant (no, a gift card is not impersonal. It is appreciated), or send flowers before hand so that the hostess can use them as décor for the party.

2. Be Gracious: If you are opening gifts, pass them around for all of the guests to see. It will give them something to do and talk about if you are not the kind of gal that likes to be in the spotlight when opening gifts.

3. Be Thankful: Traditionally, you will not need to send a thank-you note if you have thanked the giver in person. However, I believe a handwritten note is always necessary. When in doubt write a note of gratitude. Do I even need mention the following?...Never, and I mean NEVER send a printed generic thank-you. Skim down your guest list if you think that you will not have the time to write thank you’s to everyone who took the time to buy you a gift.

Money Saving Tip: Splurge on your Departure

Once your engagement is announced, it is time for the two (or three) sets of parents to meet and introduce themselves. It is tradition for the parents of the groom to call the parents of the bride to introduce themselves and set up a dinner or lunch to share in the joy and excitement of the engagement. If the groom’s family does not contact the family of the bride first, the bride’s family can take the lead and contact them first. Live in separate cities? A call, handwritten note, or both is appropriate.
Why make the effort? The parents will want to establish a friendship before it’s time to discuss sticky subjects such as attire, and financial responsibilities of the groom.

Action: Be Organized! I can’t stress this enough! As a DIY Bride, tidy planning is key. Keep a file for each vendor complete with contracts, phone numbers, names of important people, as well as problems that you have experienced with each vendor. The final month, you can pass on the info to your planner and let her work her magic!
Result: You can have all of the fun planning your wedding and pass on the wedding day stress to a competent professional.

Shannon: First of all your designs are phenomenal! How did you choose ring bearer pillows?
Melanie: That is so sweet. Thank you!! I actually started sewing ring bearer pillows when I was living in New York. I was working all kinds of odd jobs to make extra money, one of which was assisting in the front office of David Beahm Design, a large scale event décor company in Manhattan. Every now and then, a bride would request a ring bearer pillow and I wasn't extremely happy with the options that I was able to find. I'd only ever sewn pillows for my own home, but felt that I could create something special and beautiful. I offered to personally custom create and sew any new ring pillow orders, and oddly enough, it stuck. I have been sewing them ever since. When it came time to launch Maihar Design, it just made sense that we start with the ring pillow.

Shannon: Your pillows have a casual elegance to them. Where do you find your inspiration?
Melanie: Everywhere! I love bold and whimsical color palettes and unexpected use of proportion and hue. Everywhere you look there is something interesting and beautiful to see, and for me, different things will stand out to my eye, depending on how I am feeling. I can find inspiration through designed interiors, a bouquet of flowers, a box of crayons or a piece of clothing thrown haphazardly across a bed. It is actually quite random. I am particularly drawn to things that are beautiful and (I won't deny it) feminine, and I always love unexpected and witty combinations.

Shannon: Your designs are more than just a ring bearer pillow-they are an heirloom. How do you suggest a bride personalize her pillow?
Melanie: One of my favorite things about ring pillows is that they are such traditional heirlooms! Whether they are passed down through families or kept as personal keepsakes, they are such sweet mementos. We have tried to create a variety of styles and colors that range from traditional and elegant to modern and light-hearted and will be offering a bit more option for customization in the newer lines. I would encourage any bride to select the colors and styles that not only represent the wedding she has designed, but one that reflects her personality and will be a cherished reminder of the most important day of her life.

Shannon: So what's in the works for Maihar Designs?
Melanie: We are about to launch our new line in early August, which will offer a wider range of price points for brides as well as newer and more varied style options. We would truly love to be able to offer as many options as possible so that each bride can find the pillow that suits her best. On top of this, we are thrilled to be launching our "magic wands" aka flower girl wands as well as a few fun hair accessories!! It should be fun!

Trendy Bride: Grace Mallory Crumley. Grace is a brand new Free Car Driver with Mary Kay and soon to be new Mary Kay Sales Director.

Trendy Moment: A memorable first dance which included not one, not two or even three, but FOUR songs with four genres of choreography; Ballroom, Hip Hop, Texas Two-Step, and a Theatrical number. "We wanted to do something different for our First Dance, but it was actually my mom's idea!"

Trendy Tricks: Grace and Winfield used www.Mix Meister.com to create their ménage of songs. They then asked Yours Truly to come up with the choreography. We spent several one-hour sessions learning and perfecting their dance. Grace shares that "The practice time was really nice because we had a break away from all the planning to just enjoy each other and have fun!" The crowd was wowed, surprised, and truly impressed.

Trendy Advice: Whether your First Dance is simple or complex, make it a priority to have an amazing entrance. Immediately following your Introduction, have your new hubby lead you into the room Princess Style. He will want to show off his own Trendy Bride for all to see!

Leave Room for Cake-Not Budget Guilt

This is YOUR day, YOUR way. So why spend your wedding day brunch in budget guilt? Follow these steps to keep you in the clear.

Budget Breakdown: Before you even begin to plan, sit down with your coordinator or financer to break your costs into categories. I don’t care how much money you have in the bank. Everyone needs a Budget. Draw up a ‘contract’ with your fiancé promising to each other that you will stay on track. “I felt secure knowing what I could spend in each category and I didn’t worry about the cost of anything” –Jackie, 2006 bride

Gotta Have It: Decide what you think is the most important aspect of your wedding day. What do you gotta have? Would you like an unlimited guest list? Are you excited about having the hottest shoes and lash extensions? Are you dreaming of a phenomenal band? Budget accordingly to your wishes.

Leave Room: Have an overage section in your budget that you can dip into when you just HAVE to have those rhinestones in your bouquet. Trust me…you will need it.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: Leave room for hidden costs like tips, premarital counseling, and last minute alterations. Choose invitations that won’t require a ton of extra postage.

Communicate: Meet with your wedding planner, financer, and/or fiancé once a week to discuss the status of your budget. Keep your meeting to a maximum of 15 minutes. Use your conflict management that you learned in premarital counseling to keep you in wedding bliss and away from Bridezilla-ness.

Have your Coordinator on Speed-dial: When you feel a guilt-trip coming on, call up your coordinator. She is there to solve your problems-even before they arrive.

Courting Your Wedding Coordinator

Let’s face it. We all know the term “Bridezilla” and we all have heard stories of fanatical wedding planners. Finding the best wedding planner for YOU will keep these two phenomena at bay. How to? Follow these three simple guidelines…

1. Set up Interviews: Meet with several different coordinators to get a feel for their style. The wedding coordinator will be interviewing you, not they other way around. Through this backwards process, you will get to know how they work. You ultimately want to hire a reputable coordinator that also has the same taste, style, and definition of ‘quality’ as yourself. That way, you can trust her to make any last minute decisions for you.
Best advice: Take recommendations from your friends and family. They know you well enough to lead you to the right coordinator for you.

2. Be Prepared: The consultant should be asking you questions about your vision, style, budget, and what you feel are the most important aspects of your wedding. It is okay to not have the answers to some of these questions-that is what you are paying her for. But prepared information will facilitate conversation which will ultimately answer the question, “Is she/he the wedding coordinator for me?’
Best advice: Discuss the above topics with your fiancé and whoever is paying for the wedding before you meet with your coordinators.

3. Go with your Gut: Which coordinator makes you feel excited about your wedding? What about feeling secure? Relieved? Happy? At ease? And most importantly, comfortable? You will be working with this person in months to come and you should feel comfortable voicing your opinion with them. I am not saying you will be BFF with this person but you should be able to feel an initial level of trust.
Best advice: Be Yourself during the interviews. You will feel a pull towards the personality type that best suits your own.

And remember, spending time finding the right coordinator for you will ultimately cut down on the time you spend designing, planning, and coordinating your perfectly special day.
